Johnny Cash

The name Johnny Cash is synonymous with “legend.” What do you do when presented with newly found written work from a legend? Turn those poems into songs for the upcoming album, Johnny Cash: Forever Words.

After Cash’s children John and Roseanne Cash found a “monstrous assessment” of their father’s written material, John worked with producer Steve Berkowitz to put the words to music. When selecting artists to contribute to the album, John said he chose those with a personal story and connection to his late father

Chris Cornell recorded one of those songs before his untimely death. And, as Pitchfork points out, the roles were reversed in the '90s, when Cash covered “Rusty Cage,” one of Cornell’s Soundgarden songs, on his 1996 album, Unchained

In addition to Cornell, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and more recorded music for Forever Words. See the full track listing and a trailer for the album below!

The album is expected to drop April 6, but you can preorder it here.
